I might always be late to the trend
but
that has no effect on my obsession with it!
This year it is the
VELVET PUMPKIN!

probably what started it all for us...
TO.DIE.FOR.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I wanted one hundred the first time I ever laid eyes on them
but I am also on the cheap side and wasn't willing to pay that much money for them
so I decided to wait until Hobby Lobby carried them
which is one year before Wal-Mart
and this year? neither!
it was going to be up to me to figure this thing out because
unlike some trends
they are so beautiful they will never go away
and I don't care who has them as long as I do!
My first realization...it's all about the fabric
SILK VELVET
so I ordered some odd colors in fat quarters, robbed my toiletries of dental floss and bought some cheap rice at the grocery store
I knew I was on to something obsessive because if I know anybody I know me
and I love to blend my loves....peacock velvet meet my pumpkin pattern
I happen to have a teeny pumpkin patch so I robbed the stems and then realized I would be needing more....hello eBay!
first came the experiment with some leftover fabric

what I really wanted initially was some for my pink dining/music room
PINK VELVET PUMPKINS
that's all
I just kept having enough left over fabric to make just one more little one
and gosh before I knew it....I had oodles of pink velvet pumpkins
to go with
this gorgeoso blown glass beauty
and then I saw the shades of purples and lavenders
that go so nicely with my paisley tablecloth
wondering if I should fill my copper pot with them?
and then I just about forgot that moment I ordered another fat quarter in midnight blue and she had back surgery and didn't ship in time so she sent me two to be nice and well....
maybe a few blue ones here?

and so I bought some in

and I'm embarrassed to show you the lime green ones!
but they look lovely with these!
and let's not forget silver...yes...silver and pumpkins are two pumps in a kin patch for sure
I think silver silk velvet would be gaudy don't you?

Gina I started out years ago buying silk velvet pumpkins on etsy and eBay. Pricey but I loved them. Since I sew silk velvet statement pillows I already I had enough material to try my hand. So I found a tutorial on google and suddenly I was making lots of them ... Easy Peasy and fun to make. I cut 13, 11 and 9 inch circles and in trios they look cool. I love your choice of color's. Jewel like. Yours are stunning. BTW I buy my silk velvet on eBay by the yard for not much money.

Those are fantastic. I have the stuff sitting in my craft room to make them. Can you tell me how you attached the stems? Did you glue them on? What did you use for glue (if you glued them). Thanks for any info. xo Diana

You may be late to the party, but you still beat me there. I've been meaning to make these since I first saw them and have hoarded pumpkin stems ever since. Oh well, there's always next year. Love all your pumpkins!

You crack me up! Yes indeedy, you went pumpkin crazy. L-O-V-E all of your velvet-inspired ideas of different colors and sizes. I wasn't so much a fan until I saw your genius of using REAL pumpkin stems--they make all the difference. Where did you find enough rice to fill all those gourds? You must have had two barrels worth on hand for your hobby.

I've a little fondness for velvet pumpkins too. I didn't have the spunk to make my own, but like you, one color begets another it seems. Velvet pumpkins are simple elegance. I love having hem here and these in our home. I think it's the real stems that stole my heart. Love the organic touch!

Absolutely beautiful, Gina! I think the jewel tones are my favorite. I made some to sell at market that I made with an orangey pink bridesmade dress and they were hits. I also did a stacked one (graduated in size) like a snowman and it was the first to sell. The real pumpkin stems definitely make them perfect!

Gina I got a whole bunch at ROSS like for 3.99 all colors and different sizes.. got mine last year but, they had them this year too....
