MyORC--THE MUSIC ROOM

When we purchased 822, this room was a nice large room
with original rough beams, a cove ceiling and wonderful big windows

in our part of the country many homes have a
parlor or formal living room

even though the house was built in the early 20's it was remodeled in the early 70's
dark paneling and gold or orange carpet was all the rage then
almost every window has a window seat...this is how thick this house is
my mother was an interior decorator and I'm pretty sure she made those velvet drapes and cornices

The marble fireplace had potential behind all that paneling!

let loose the big guns!

we removed the dark paneling
(I think black liquid nails was on sale)

we covered the entire area with MDF and several kinds of fancy molding, painting it Sulphur White
we painted the walls with just a whisper of Peony
even though we put down a nice thick shag carpet, it's nice to remember there are hardwood floors

we took the mirror from the upstairs bath and built it in
I hung this antique mirror on top of that...I like to stack mirrors
and I like to change this mantel

Here is Mr. PV removing the glass
it was just so leaky and crusted over with hard water deposits, and I can't say it enough...

Glass is Cheap!
windows are not
the diamond beveled pane windows have been a splurge for sure

but certainly one of the most important ones!

we don't use this room much since we have our kitchen/den for casual dining and entertaining
the mohair chair used to be a vest
I rarely spend money on clothes and when I bought the vest I already knew I'd wear it once or twice and then turn it into a stool....the chair was $1

 we call this room
 "the music room"
the piano is a 1921 Baby Grand we purchased on 6th Street in Amarillo

it's the age of the house

the palladium windows came from an old farm house
and they were already pink!
I marked Middle C with blue painter's tape so our peeps can learn the scale

new light fixtures from Lowes...of course all light fixtures should have dimmer switches!
I love Lowes!

I have such a mix in this room...not that it will always stay like this, but for now
my old farm table is mixed with my tufted furniture
we use this as a dining room when we have our whole family...this is rare

Baboo's china cabinet is filled with dollar silver items from estate sales
it's a strange mix too...like Federal Oriental...with a matching buffet

This is a fabric I'm loving right now...it matches many rooms in the house and I move this chair around from time to time

Today
Last Christmas
Get's me in the mood!

This is not part of the music room, but when I was taking pictures today (November 3)
this is how glorious the day was.  You can't see but, the zinnias are covered with Monarchs and the roses are just thriving in the cool crisp weather...I just wanted to share this moment with you.

If you are into renovation before and after photos are one of the most exciting ways to
document your project, but more than anything else, they can give you such a satisfaction and a hope

hang in there!

~Inspiration~
the cove ceiling and beams and that gorgeous marble fireplace

~We~
  • painted--walls Peony--all trim/molding White Sulphur
  • replaced the carpet...yes there are original wood floors underneath but I love carpet in many places and this is one of them!
  • replaced the windows
  • made the fireplace a statement
  • new light fixtures from Lowes

~Biggest Challenge~
This is one of the easiest rooms we renovated
new paint, new carpet, new lights and gussy-ing up the fireplace

~Favorite Thing~
the piano that lived in another house for nearly 100 years waiting to live in ours
and the music that will be played in ours for the next 100 years

You have sure done a lot of work...and those windows were a splurge that was well worth it. They give the house so much character. Love all your finds and mix & matches. That is what makes a home a home! xo Diana

Amazing progress! I almost used the same fabric in my daughter's room, but went with a slightly different but similar one - it's so pretty!

Oh Gina, YES YES YES! Your home is very similar to mine, but yours definitely has more curves and nooks and is endless in the charm. Oh how I love your makeover and that past Christmas photo of the lights through the leaded windows...magic. HAPPY DAY!

I think this might be my favourite room in the house. I love how you placed your Christmas tree in the bay window. We do the same thing! And when you drive up to the house, it's magical seeing the tree in the window at night.

Another beautiful room and I love your window...worth the investment! I love the fabric on the chair, too. How are the zinnias faring now? My fall flowers aren't looking so hot...it looks like January around here. Did yo have a hard freeze this week?

Another lovely room, and your new windows make all the difference - inside and out! Love the fireplace painted, too.

Gina, your home is such a treasure--a precious gift for all those who enter and all of those who get to be voyeurs. The thought and love you bestow in every room is overwhelming.I think, perhaps, it is because of your patience of allowing to unfold between your vision and shopping missions. LOVE your spiritualism and intent placed in each room. I am so very grateful that you have a blog and chose to share your manor and your wisdom with us.
