7 LAYERS OF CUTE

Do you remember this show/book?  Man I sure do and will have to say
I couldn't agree more with his theory!

I just happen to have tweaked it a bit to suit my own personal style

1.  Flooring
When we added the room to connect the old efficiency apartment/master suite to the main part of the house
we put in a drain because we anticipated this would become our pool space and where all the wet suits and towels would be dumped by lots of soon to be grand kids
For today, we stained the concrete and I added this rug that I had at Zulu Art Gallery
It's old and worn and colorful and I think that being tromped by wet folks will only make it better
2.  Wall Paint
I really struggled over this color.  When I went Saturday to pick another, better suited to the art,
I still came back to Jerico.  It fit the tiles, I like the name and the light in the room can handle the burst.
What I did do though is choose a flat sheen.  You can't see here, but it really made a difference.

3.  Art
I cannot say it enough...art makes a space come alive and the more alive the art the more alive the room
This is why I always go for something someone really painted.  Or as in the case of the cross..that someone's hands really created.  You can for sure pull off prints in your home...as long as you have some real stuff too!
And for the record...in my opinion..antiques are art too!

4.  Plants
Plants are life.  If you don't have a green thumb?  Get a cactus and don't water it.  I am very guilty of bringing in all my summer plants and will eventually throw them to the cold sometime after Christmas.  But I just hate to let them die without a fight.  Much like I can't stand to throw out food, yet don't mind throwing out frozen bags of whatever the heck it might be at a later date.  If they make it...out they go in the spring..if they don't?
Adios!

4.  Zen
How does one describe Zen?  Nature?  Spiritual?  Religious? Earthy?
This rock was brought back to me from a dear friend from Sedona...I love rocks and I love this old copper jardiniere.  I love the patina of the copper and will probably keep this filled with water?  Why?  Not sure!

5.  Favorite things
I love books!  Peep asked me last night to suggest a book.  I went into the garage and dug out Anna Karenina, blew off the dust and said..."good luck with this one..I've been on page 34 for 7 years."
What I really like is a book about what I love with lots of pictures and some words to go with it.
Do I read these books?  Oh yes!  Do I look out my window through that incredible kaleidoscope?
Dang right I do!
another example of favorite things and books...I get stuck in this layer a lot

6.  Texture
As in baskets and lots of them!  Even when I was in high school I bought baskets at Pier 1 with my lifeguard money.  When my poor Mr. P.V. sees this pile he'll have a hard time concentrating at work as they are covering up the vents!

And his last but not mine is
7.  A Cute Vignette

I can't really explain it, but I know when I get it right because I like to stand there and look at it
It makes me feel like a place I want to be, or sit, or walk through, or linger, or climb up and down, or
have a beer, or watch the birds or think about the hands that made that ______, or
blog about it

Don't get all excited...
This little area is far from done and the most I can do  is cover up the scary parts with a fern
Hey...it's what I do!

Look away from the mess...eyes on the ball...focus on the cute!

Count all the way to 7...and pull up a good book to a cute old wicker chaise, chop the silk pillows
 and grab your kaleidoscope!
You can work later!

This room design is a work of art, itself! You make layering and using a colourful palette look effortless and it's one of the hardest things to pull off in decorating. Well done! ~ Maureen

I've brought in all my house plants.....geez I'm running out of windows / room. I totally agree: if they make it, great.....if not, out they go. Love your concrete floors!

Hello Gina:
It is incredibly helpful to have some basic decorating rules to follow when one embarks upon a project. Otherwise, all can become muddled and the end result far from satisfactory. You give some great tips here and we love the way that you combine the usual with the extraordinary. That really makes for interest in a decorating scheme.

Your layers are divine. You appreciate the joy of surrounding yourself with wonderful organic elements that are a feast for the soul. (I once brought a rock home from a visit to NY state. I so get collecting rocks.)
