WINDOWS

Today's project...if it gets above 50 like the weather man promised.
This window has been in my garage for months.  A perfect window storm includes
1.  Window(s)
2.  Carpenter turned gas line pumper willing to work on Sunday
3.  At least 50 degrees, although I have worn a coat many days inside this house

Living on Barkley Street all my life I have walked passed this house a jillion times.  I used to think man...that kitchen window should be a garden window!  If I lived there, that's what I'd do!

This is what the front of the house looked like when we cut the trees back to reveal just how old and ugly those windows were.  They also featured that green screening so popular in the late 60's.

AHA!  Expensive you say?  Well, windows are but glass is C.H.E.A.P.  I should know for a fact, but maybe around $7 a foot?
This as a window was priced around $1200.  But we just bought the glass, double pane, and had our very talented Chad install it!  In the summer the window box will spill over with bright petunias!

This window was even cheaper and easier to replace!  Can you see that very cool pig?

But every now and then, because of all that money you've saved, you must splurge on a little window bling...jewelry for your home!

Note in photo 2:  we had these custom made from a door company so that the two windows beside the front door could match in size and statement.  I would have to say they were totally worth the money spent.  I would rather have these windows than car insurance.   And I hope to have at least one more..maybe in our bedroom around the corner.  That project should begin soon!

Back to photo 2 to remember the front door now used to be another ugly window and another reason to know a "now and then splurge" is what a good house deserves!

This house also had some very strange doors.  This was a door and we turned it into a colorful window that I can say I saved on window treatments once I fill in the side lights.  Just trying to decide what color.  Pink?

or a sunny yellow!

This window will soon be replaced as part of the master bedroom project.  These are the green screens I was talking about.  Yep...that's bird poop!

I hate to brag but I think this "window" cost $30 AND it is very efficient!  Double thermal pane with no openings!  Cedar and tightly caulked.
Pretty sure it made a huge difference and while I'm at it...no money is better spent in a remodel than a new commode!  Spending around $120 makes it all seem so fresh and clean and right with the world! This bathroom actually had that ivy growing inside.

Front down and three in the back to go.   We did discuss fire code issues with this window, but decided to just put an ax near it.  No..I'm not kidding, I plan to hide it under the chair.  It will also have new stucco siding and a French balcony.  Later,  when we build the dining room or lanai, it's very possible this will have French doors out on to a small deck.  But hey...I'm willing to spend $60 to make it look better now. (this spring).  I also have a very cool lightening rod for the peak, and no I'm not worried about lightening..too many tall trees that would get it first!

This is a bathroom and will get some kind of wavy glass or glass brick.  I'm saving up my quarters for it!

As I look back over these photos it almost brings tears to my eyes to see what we have accomplished in such a short time.  My hubs was bragging on me today about my acute sense of patience about the big picture window ($300) and he's right.  It will happen soon enough and if it were there I would just be moving on to some other project.

So...since it's still about 41 degrees, I think I will go chill my jets with one of those ginger martinis I've been craving!

Maybe that will help me overcome the fact that this is my master bathroom....
mere steps away from my master bedroom!
